About The Dark Mountain

Our Origins

The Dark Mountain was originally a chat-zone based on the once popular messaging app called Mxit. Based in South Africa, Mxit revolutionized the way people communicate by means of instant messaging. It originated around the year 2006 and soon gained popularity as more and more people started to use Mxit as a means to keep in contact with their friends. It cost little to no money to use and you could use your "airtime" to chat. Chat Zones were implemented onto the app, along with the infamous Dark Mountain, a chat zone dedicated to those that were interested in all things fantasy and role-play. It featured 15 chat rooms, all present on this current discord server, where people could chat with like minded people. It wasn't long before things like clans took a foothold and people started to battle one another, form alliances, form enemies, make or break friendships but ultimately have fun. The Dark Mountain of old had its prime glory years where activity was in abundance and the rooms filled to the brim. The people that frequented the Dark Mountain were known for their strong willed opinions and they backed away from no threat.

Unfortunately as time progressed, the app named Mxit started to take a downturn in light of more modern and bigger applications such as BBM and Whatsapp and in October 2015 it was announced that Mxit will be shutting down and as of 30 September 2016 the service will no longer be available. This marked a sad day for many as it spelled the end of an era many came to love. Chat Zones were knocked down to almost no activity with users abandoning the app and eventually the original Dark Mountain died a slow death. Over the passing years, many attempts have been made to resurrect the Mountain of old and once again get those that frequented it together, but despite most efforts, it kept failing. It wasn't until the year 2018 on the 25th of January that another attempt was made at the revival of the Dark Mountain. What started as an informal Whatsapp group, soon grew to become much more and call for something more permanent was made. Enter Discord. The Server was set up and initially only had the original 15 legacy channels. As time went by, the room for growth was evident and the Mountain steadily evolved into what it is today. A home to the old that holds true to the original Dark Mountain and also a sanctuary to the new to catch a glimpse of what was and what can be!
